Marquette Golden Eagles Information

The official teams colors are blue and gold. The Marquette University teams have changed their name several times. At first the team had such names as the Golden Avalanche, the Blue and Gold (according to the official colors), and the Hilltoppers. Then they were known as the Warriors for about 40 years. In 1994 the team was renamed and got its present name the Marquette Golden Eagles. Though there have been a few attempts to change its name and even one successful (2004), when it has been changed to the Gold. But, nevertheless, in 2005 it has been changed again to the Golden Eagles. Consequently, the official teams mascot is Golden Eagle.

In 1970 the Golden Eagles gained the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). They beat the Massachusetts, and the Utah and Pete Maravichs LSU and reached the final. There the Eagles won against St. Johns and set their season record. In 1974 the Marquette Golden Eagles entered the NCAA finals, but were swept in the last game. So they finished only with the second result.

In 1977 the Eagles advanced in the NCAA championship again. The team won over the Cincinnati, the Kansas State, the Wake Forest and the UNC Charlotte basketball teams. And finally their efforts were rewarded - having defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels in the last game, the Eagles gained the NCAA championship victory and set a final record. The Eagles produced one of the most exciting NCAA basketball games in the match against the UNC Charlotte. It was a tense struggle, which was successfully finished by the Jerome Whiteheads goal during the last few minutes.

The Marquette Golden Eagles mens basketball team has turned to be one of the most successful Marquette University athletic program. The Bradley Center is the teams playing facility.
