The head coach of the mens basketball team is Gary Williams, while the team trains at the Comcast Center. Previously, Gary had been coaching the Boston College Eagles in 1982-1986 and the Ohio State Buckeyes in the years 1986-1989. Williams was assigned as head coach of Maryland in 1989. The basketball program and the University athletic program in general was rather unstable, arising from the shock of the 1986 demise of Maryland basketball star Len Bias. Williams led the 1989-1990 team to a notable 18-13 record and a National Invitation Tournament place.
In the period of Williamss coaching, the Terrapins saw their performance increase, the team was successful throughout the 1990s and the beginning of 2000s. In 2002, the Terrapins advanced to the NCAA National Championship and won Indiana 64-52. He was the 1st coach to have led his alma mater to a national award since Norm Sloan.
As of the beginning of 2006, Williams has got a record of 560-319 overall (.637), and 353-191 (.649) at the University of Maryland. His overall NCAA championship record is 26-13 (.667, ninth among active coaches), 22-10 at his alma mater. Williams has advanced Maryland basketball team to 11 NCAA championship appearances, 9 seasons of 20 victories or more, 3 postseason NIT appearances, 62 victories over ranked rivals, two Atlantic Coast Conference regular season awards, an Atlantic Coast Conference championship title, 2 Elite Eights, 7 Sweet Sixteens, 2 Final Fours, and a national championship.
