Miami Hurricanes Basketball

The Miami Hurricanes basketball team is the official basketball team, representing the University of Miami. The university was founded in 1925. Its athletic teams compete in the intercollegiate sport and represent the University in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The University of Miami has 15 mens and womens sports teams, which take part in the competitions (football, baseball, basketball, cross-country, diving, tennis, and track and field, golf, rowing, soccer, swimming, and volleyball).

The Hurricanes basketball players are one of the most successful Miami teams. The official Hurricanes colors are orange, green and white they reflect the colors of orange tree. Since 1926 the teams official mascot has been Sebastian the Ibis. The ibis has been chosen to be its mascot because it is the bird, which is considered to be the last escaping from a hurricane and the first making its appearance again, when the hurricane ends. It first lets everone know that the worse is over. Thus, it presents such qualities as courage, strength, speed, and leadership. The Miami athletes try to keep up to this qualities.

Over the last 30-35 years the Miami Hurricanes basketball team has come through a number of upturns and downturns.

In 1970-1980 because of the financial problems and other difficulties the team had a run of bad luck. The Hurricanes didnt manage to achieve anything notable during this period, though in the 1985-1986 season they tried to turn the corner, but, unfortunately, failed again.

Everything turned for the better, when a new coach Leonard Hamilton was employed. The Miami Hurricanes have started to play in the Big East. By the end of the 1990s, the Hurricanes had become one of the best teams in the Big East. In 1998, the Hurricanes first made the NCAA series over the last 40 years. What is more, the team made the NCAA games three years in succession (1998, 1999, 2000).

From 2000 to 2004, after Hamilton had left the Hurricanes for the NBA's Washington Wizards, they had another downturn. The only big success, the team had managed to score during the period under Perry Clark (its new trainer) coaching, was a 5 seed in the NCAA series.

Nevertheless, the last two seasons, after Petty Clark replacement, are proved to be another turning-point. During the last two seasons the Hurricanes, led by Frank Haith, made headway in the Atlantic Coast Conference and proved to be serious adversary for their opponents.

Now the Miami Hurricanes basketball team is one of the leading college sports teams, which has a lot of NBA players among their alumni.
