First of all, the two teams out of these 65 participants, which are considered to be the weakest, compete in the opening-round match (the so-called "play-in game"). It usually takes place in Dayton, Ohio. So after this game only 64 competitors remain in the NCAA tournament. These teams are placed within each regional (16 teams in each). And then they start competing in the Regionals first and second rounds. The first and second round games usually take place on the first weekend of the NCAA series.

The winners of the second round in each regional get into the regional semi-final games. They are commonly known as the Sweet Sixteen. Then those teams, which score the victory in the Sweet Sixteen games, reach the regional finals, known as the Elite Eight. The Elite Eight matches are held on the second weekend of this championship.

Finally the teams, which make great strides and win the regional finals, make their ways out of the West, the East, the South, and the Midwest Regionals to the semi-finals of the NCAA Tournament, which are called the Final Four. The participants qualified to the Final Four according to their annual rankings till 2004. But then because of the fact that very often the two strongest adversaries met in the semi-fanals and did not have a chance to reach the NCAA finals both, the teams have been started to seed for pairings according to their rotation against each other.

In 2003 season the Midwest Regional took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Kentucky team defeated # 5 seed from Wisconsin, and the Marquette won over #2 seed the Pittsburgh in the Midwest semi-fanals. In the Elite Eight match of the Midwest Regional the Marquette team advanced. Consequently, it reached the Final Four. But there the Marquette was swept by the West Regional winner from Kansas.
