Mizzou Tigers Basketball HistoryStarting over a century ago in 1906, the Missouri (Mizzou) Tigers basketball program spent its first 70 years in a state of relative obscurity and mediocrity. Aside from a standout season in 1944 where they advanced to Elite Eight glory, the Tigers neither won NCAA Championships or their own conference championships. They were simply a team that was there. They could spoil other team’s chances of tournament play, but they themselves rarely had chance to move on to postseason play. It was bland year after bland year. But then something clicked. That “Something” was the hiring of head coach Norm Stewart at the beginning of the 1967 NCAA season. The Tigers Turnaround had begun. While it wasn’t overnight, over-week, or even over-year success, the revolution was steady and unflinching. Seasons began to accrue more and more wins, going above then far above a 500 record. Within ten years the Tigers made it to the Elite Eight again. Within 12 years, they had won their first conference title (then the Big Eight Conference). After that, the Tigers were a regular at the NCAA tournament, making numerous appearances. As of the last few years, however, the Missouri Tigers basketball team has been fairly quiet, and not only because of the immense shadow cast by their school’s football counterpart. After Stewart left in the 1999 season, the Tigers have been slowly sinking back into the ways of old. Fewer tournament appearances and no more conference titles (Now the Big 12 Conference). The Tigers have been searching to find a strong leader again and hope to have found one within Mike Anderson. Until that day comes, the Tigers need you now more than ever.
