The Missouri Tigers are the athletics teams which represent the University of Missouri. It is also known as the Mizzou, or simply the MU. The Missouri Tigers participate in the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) Division I A. There are many teams representing different sports: baseball, basketball, golf, gymnastics, football, cross country, lacrosse, softball, swimming, diving, track, tennis, wrestling and volleyball. Most commonly the teams are called simply the Tigers. The athletics director is Mike Alden.
The universitys sports date from the middle of the nineteenth century. The official mascot of the Missouri Tigers is Truman the Tiger; the major teams colors are gold and black. The major Missouri Tigers rivals are the Jayhawks from the University of Kansas. Another fierce rival is the Illinois Fighting Illini team. The two teams meet every year at the Braggin Rights contest.

The Missouri Tigers are 15-time winners of various conferences, and 6-time winners of Conference Tournaments. For times the Missouri Tigers basketball teams participated in the Elite 8, and thrice in the Sweet 16. The team also participated in the Missouri Valley Conference (1918, 1920, 1921, 1922), in the Big Six Conference (1930, 1939, 1940), the Big Eight Conference (1978, 1982, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993). All in all, the Missouri Tigers have participated in 22 NCAA tournaments, in three Sweet 16 games, and in six NIT competitions.
Many Missouri Tigers basketball players were named All-American stars. Among them can be mentioned Fred Williams, George Williams, Arthur Browning, Craig Ruby, Herb Bunker, Marshal Craig, Ricky Frazier, Jon Sundvold, Doug Smith, Anthiny Peeler, Melvin Booker, and others. Keyon Dooling, Doug Smith, and Kareem Rush are current NBA players.
Basketball games are usually held at the Mizzou Arena. From 1972 to 2004 the Hearnes Center was the home to the Missouri Tigers basketball teams. The Mizzou Arena is a sports facility of the University of Missouri (Columbia). It is the home for the Missouri Tigers mens and womens basketball teams. The seating capacity exceeds fifteen thousand people. The championships of the Missouri State High School Activities Association are also held there. Originally, the Mizzou Arena was named the Paige Sports Arena (after Elizabeth Paige Laurie, the daughter of Nancy Laurie, the Wal-Mart heiress). The university students did not like the name, because the girl had nothing to do with the University of Missouri. Therefore, it later was renamed into the Mizzou Arena.
