The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are the athletics teams of the University of Notre Dame. It is a private Roman Catholic institution, which is situated in Notre Dame, Indiana State. The current president is the rev. John Jenkins. The school was founded in 1842. It is the highest ranked Roman Catholic University in the United States, according to the news survey.
The teams, name the Fighting Irish, is taken from the Irish history. Those were the Irish immigrant soldiers, who were fighting in the Civil War with the Irish Brigades. The third university president (William Corby, 1866-1872, 1877-1881) was a well-known Irish Brigade chaplain. Previously, the Fighting Irish were also known as the Rovers and the Ramblers, especially during the period when Knute Rockne was the team coach. Sometimes they were unofficially called the Irish Terriers (the breed of Irish dogs). There are several versions of how the name appeared. One tells that the moniker was born in 1899 when during the game with the Northwestern team the fans of the later were chanting in support of their favorites: Kill the fighting Irish, Kill the Fighting Irish. Another story supports the version that the name originated in 1924 during the severe confrontation between the Notre Dame students and the Ku Klux Klan. The story is described in one of Todd Tuckers book, which is called Notre Dame vs. the Klan: How the Fighting Irish Defeated the Ku Klux Klan. The most popular explanation is different though. It is believed that the moniker is the result of the common Irish stereotypes, the nations true grit and determination.
