Rutgers Basketball Background
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are the athletics teams, which represent the Rutgers University (the State University of New Jersey). In all, there are 27 sports teams. The current universitys president is Richard Levis McCormick.
Originally, the Rutgers athletes were known as Queensman, as the old universitys name was the Queens College. In 1925 a new mascot was chosen, the chanticleer. It is a fighting rooster from the fables of Reynard the Fox. The mascot became the subject of mockery as it is associated with being a chicken. In 1955 a new mascot, the Scarlet Knight, was chosen.
