Rutgers Basketball Background

The official color is scarlet. It was chosen in 1900, though the teams first used it in their 1st intercollegiate football game in 1869 to distinguish themselves from the opponent, the Princeton players.

The Rutgers University became one of the first schools, which was engaged in intercollegiate athletics. The oldest universitys rival is the Princeton University.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights participate in the Big East Conference since 1995 and in the NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) Division I A. In all there are 30 Rutgers University teams participating in the NCAA.

The home of mens and womens basketball teams is the Louis Brown Athletic Center. Its original name is the RAC (the Rutgers Athletic Center). It was opened in November of 1977. The seating capacity is eight thousand people. In the first game the Rutgers Scarlet Knights won over their rival Seton Hall. Before 1977 the College Avenue gym was used for playing basketball. The arena was named after Louis Brown, the university graduate and the golf player, who made a big endowment to the Rutgers University.

The basketball mens team first played in 1906. The first three games were lost, but the following year they set a 3-12 record. For the next five years the play was suspended. Only in 1913 the team renewed activity. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights womens basketball team began playing in 1974. The first game ended with their victory over the Princeton basketball team.

The Universitys Hall of Fame includes many legendary basketball coaches and players. There are Gene Armstead (2005), Eric Riggins (2003), Doug Patton (2001), Kelvin Troy (2000), Abdel Anderson (1998), and many other professional players, who contributed to the outstanding play of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights basketball team.

The most fruitful season for the team was the 1975-1976 season, when they became the winners 31 times. The fewest number of victories the team gained in the 1906-1907 season. In 1989-1990 season the team scored the highest number of 3-point goals 216. In 2002-2003 season the Rutgers Scarlet Knights defeated the Syracuse University, the National Champions, and later won over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish by thirteen points.
