About the SEC Basketball Tournament

Originally, there were ten members in the Southeastern Conference, later two more universities joined it (the University of Arkansas and the University of South Carolina in 1991), and thus currently, there are twelve members. The Southeastern Conference was the first conference, which received the permission from the NCAA authorities to hold a championship game in football every year. The games were held at the Legion Field in Birmingham (the first 2 years) and the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Geographically the Southeastern Conference stretches from Kentucky to Florida and from Arkansas to South Carolina. The conference was divided into two divisions: the East and the West divisions. To the East Division belong the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, the University of Kentucky, the University of South Carolina, the University of Tennessee, and Vanderbilt University. The West Division comprise the University of Alabama, the University of Arkansas, Auburn University, Louisiana State University, the University of Mississippi, and Mississippi State University.

The main Southeastern Conference basketball facilities include the Coleman Coliseum, the Bud Walton Arena, the Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum, the Stephen C. OConnell Center, the Stegeman Coliseum, the Rupp Arena, the Memorial Coliseum, the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, the Tad Smith Coliseum, the Humphrey Coliseum, the Colonial Center, the Thompson-Boling Arena, and the Memorial Gymnasium.

All Southeastern Conference teams participate in 16-game schedule. Twice they meet the team from their own division and once each team of the other division. Originally the teams had to follow the 18-game schedule, which was really hard and exhausting; lately it was decided to change this tradition. Kentucky is considered to be one of the best Southeastern Conference teams as they were practically undefeated in several seasons.

The Southeastern Conference sponsors many sports: football, basketball, baseball, softball, womans soccer, womens volleyball, cross country, track and field, swimming and diving, tennis, golf, and womens gymnastics.

The most famous Southeastern Conference basketball rivalry is Kentucky Tennessee. This rivalry is also called the border war. These teams have played more than two hundred times by now.
