South Carolina Gamecocks Information

The South Carolina Gamecocks are the sports teams, representing the University of South Carolina. The University is situated in Columbia, South Carolina. It was founded in 1801 and admitted its first students in 1805.

The South Carolina Gamecocks participate in the Southeastern Conference and represent the University in Division I of the NCAA series. The Gamecocks compete in 18 sports programs: baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, and track and field (mens sports); basketball, cross country, equestrian, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball (womens sports).

Originally the athletic teams of the University of South Carolina were known as the Fighting Gamecocks. This nickname appeared in 1902, when the teams fans brought a poster featuring a tiger (the mascot of Clemson) with a gamecock standing on top of it. Clemson fans were really furious as the image meant the defeat of their favorite team. In 1903 the South Carolina teams were mentioned as the Gamecocks (for short) in Columbia's morning newspaper. So the South Carolina sports teams have been known as the Gamecocks since that time. Though the mens and womens teams have still been known as the Fighting Gamecocks and the Lady Gamecocks correspondingly. Though, this distinction names are mentioned far more rarely now.

The main school colors are black and garnet. They appeared about the same time as the original teams name. Now there is also a supplementary color. It is gold, which depicts the color of the spurs (traditionally used by gamecocks during the cockfights). The official teams mascot is the Cocky, which was first presented in 1902.

The South Carolina Gamecocks are remarkable and strong teams and no wonder that they have made several notable rivalries: with Clemson University (in state) and with the University of Georgia and the University of Florida in the Southeastern Conference (since they joined the SEC in 1991). The Gamecocks made the rivalry with the University of Florida Gators, when they employed the Gators former trainer Steve Spurrier and then, led by him, won the first match with the Gators. Moreover, not long after that, the Gamecocks mens basketball team gave the Gators (who were the NCAA champions at the moment) a total defeat in the regular season.

The South Carolina Gamecocks basketball team has turned out to be quite successful. The team meets its adversaries at the Colonial Center during its home games. Altogether, the basketball team has made 8 NCAA Tournament appearances, scored the SEC regular season (1997), and twice finished on the second place in the SEC Tournaments. By the way, led by the Gamecocks current coach Dave Odom, the team has made great strides and scored two NIT Championships in succession (during the last two seasons). The last championship the Gamecocks started with the victory over the Michigan team and successfully finished it, having won the Wolverines in the finals.
