The Tennessee Volunteers are the athletics teams of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, also known as UT Knoxville, or simply UTK. Opened in 1974, it is a public university, ruled by Dr. John D. Petersen. The university has got twenty varsity sports teams and twenty-five various sport clubs. The major school colors are white and orange. The mascot of the Tennessee Volunteers is Smokey IX (hound), and their fight song is called Down the Field.
The athletic teams compete in the SEO (the Southeastern Conference) of the NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) Division I A.
The University of Tennessee has one major difference from other American Universities: the UTK has separate sports departments for mens and womens athletics. The university mens teams are named the Volunteers, and the womens teams are the Lady Volunteers. Very often the name is shortened to simply Vols.
The Tennessee Volunteers womens basketball team can be with no doubt called one of the most successful basketball teams at the school level, of course. The ladies head coach is Pat Summit. She has become a legendary player, and is the best coach in the NCAA list. She is all-time winningest coach. By 2006 her basketball teams won more that 9 hundred games.
The major rival for the Tennessee Volunteers in womens basketball is the University of Connecticut. They continuously meet at different basketball tournaments and sometimes iven in the championships. Within the Conference the major rivals are Vanderbilt, Georgia, and Louisiana State University.
The rivalry between the Tennessee Volunteers and the University of Connecticut is the most famous basketball rivalry, and is considered to be the fiercest and the most intensive one. The two teams meet every year in winter at one or both of the colleges. An interesting fact is that they meet for the third time in the NCAA womens basketball tournament. The first game between the two teams was held in 1995 and was televised. In fact, it was a rarity at that time, because the mens teams have always been more popular. The Connecticut Huskies program turned out to be stronger, so they beat the Tennessee Volunteers with the score 77-64.
Currently the Connecticut Huskies have the leading position (13-8), the same is with the tournament games (5-2) and matches for the title (4-0). The Tennessee Volunteers won over the rivalry in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2006. Both teams are in the list of the best fifteen teams according to the Associated Press rankings.
The mens basketball team is coached by Bruce Pearl, who revitalized the teams power. In 2005-2006 season they even claimed the SEC East title. The season ended with the new record, 22-8, and the NCAA Tournament position. The major mens rivals are Florida, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky.
