Texas Longhorn basketball team is one of the sports teams of The University of Texas at Austin. The University of Texas at Austin (or The University of Texas, Texas, or UT) is currently the leading institution of the University of Texas System. The name of the team originated from the Longhorn cattle, which used to be an essential element of the development of Texas. Therefore, the team is usually named the Texas Longhorns. The women's basketball squad is occasionally referred to as the Lady Longhorns, while both the men's and women's teams are generally called the Longhorns. The year 2006 was also highlighted by the 100th anniversary of the basketball program at University of Texas. To commemorate the date, special logos have been designed and put on uniforms of the team members.

The women's basketball program was a perennial power across the USA, especially at the end of 1980s. They received a National Title in 1986 and throughout the 1990s. Before the beginning of the present 2005-2006 season, the team entered the season ranked #2 in the USA.
