The Texas Tech Red Raiders mascot is the Masked Rider. It is very old and its original name was the Ghost Rider. It got its official status after the 1954 Gator Bowl game (a college bowl game, which is held every year at the ALTEL Stadium in Jacksonville). The team had a nice idea to get a masked horse rider and make him lead the team onto the field before the game. Since that time the tradition is followed practically at each game. Several other teams also liked an interesting idea and stole it, and now use the same mascot.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders mens basketball team is lucky to have a legendary head coach Bobby Knight (since 2001). After several years of sleeping mens basketball program, the new coach made a dashing turn in the teams play, and made the team participate in the NCAA Tournament, the first time since 1996 and in the Sweet 16. But that wasnt enough to become a legendary coach. By the early 2006 Bobby Knight had won 800 games in comparison with only 350 losses.
The United Spirit Arena hosts the Texas Tech Red Raiders basketball teams. It is a multi-purpose sports facility, which hosts also the Texas Tech Red Raiders volleyball teams. Its seating capacity is more that twelve thousand spectators. The Arena became famous after in February 2000, Elton John had held his awesome performance there.
