Connecticut Huskies Men's Basketball used to be a perennial power and won altogether 18 Yankee Conference tournaments. They also fought after the appearance of the Big East Conference with traditionally strong teams of Georgetown University and Syracuse University. Jim Calhoun was employed at the beginning of the 1986-1987 season, when the Huskies basketball team had a bad record. However in 1988, the squad significantly improved their performance and got to the National Invitation Tournament. During the championship they won against the Ohio State team at Madison Square Garden, and also the National Invitation Tournament, which was the University's first national basketball award.

The year 1990 became one of the most successful seasons of the Huskies and took the UConn basketball team to the national arena. Coached by Chris Smith and Tate George, the team transformed from unranked in the preseason into winning the Big East Regular Season and Tournament Championships for the first time in the history. The year 1990 also saw the new Gampel Pavilion, which became the teams home. The Huskies were chosen for the East Reigon, however lost to Clemson 70-69, with only 1 second remaining in the Sweet 16.

UConn basketball team was a national winner throughout the 1990s, however the Final Four still remained unreachable for Calhoun and the team until 1999. A win over the Gonzaga University team advanced the UConn team to Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay for the Final Four game. They won against the Ohio State team and fought against Duke in the final, when they were defeated by 9-points, in spite of having been ranked #1 for half of the year.

The 1999 National Championship was not the last one in the history of the team. In 2004, the UConn basketball team got back to the Final Four and won the second National Championship, beating Georgia Tech 82-73.
