The Vanderbilt Commodores were a sort of great national power in the mid-1960s and early 1970s when the team was under the head coach Roy Skinner. They managed to make 4 NCAA Tournament appearances from 1988 to 1993 when they were coached by Eddie Fogler and C.M. Newton. Their current head coach Stallings was hired in April of 1999. Stallings got a team that lost 3 players from a squad that finished 14-15. There were no incoming recruits, so the situation did not look optimistic. Stallings managed to sign one player before the beginning of the season. The coach took over almost the same team that made a 5-11 record in the SEC with winning only one road game one year before.
The Vanderbilt Commodores performed a 19-11 record under same coach. Together with this Stallings helped Dan Langhi become SEC Player of the Year. Dan Langhi was the first teams player since 1993 to get the conference player of the year award. Stallings made a successful attempt to guide the Vanderbilt Commodores back to the postseason and actually led them to the teams first postseason victory since the year 1998. All this was a continuation of Stallings' streak of never having a bad season in the period of time of 24 years being a player or coach.
At present the team is considered to be among the most successful ones. Making it easier to gain success is the job that the head coach as well as his coaching staff performs on and off the court. No doubt, the team has increased their talent level and now it continues to strive to attract the nation's top recruits.
