In 1985, under the coach Rollie Massimino, the men's basketball team finished one of the most astonishing spans in NCAA competition history and won the national tournament in the first year of the 64-team field. Up to date the Wildcat team is the only eight-seed and the lowest overall seed in the history of the tournament, which has won the championship, while its overall team shooting percentage is an NCAA tournament record for a single game. The game is often quoted as the greatest upset in the history of college basketball.
Under the direction of coach Jay Wright, the mens basketball team achieved the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in 2005, however lost to the eventual champion North Carolina team by only 1 point.
The 2005-2006 season for the team was marked by the 4 place in the major polls from USA Today and the Associated Press. The team was defeated in only three regular season games and enjoyed a #1 seed in the 2006 tournament, which was their first. The victories over Monmouth, Arizona, and Boston College teams advanced them to the Elite Eight for the first time since 1988. Their loss to the final champion Florida finished the team's run for a 2nd NCAA championship in the Regional Final.
