The mascot of the Wisconsin Badgers is called Buckingham U.Badger, or Bucky Badger, for short. It was first drawn in 1940 by Art Evans. That was the time when the badger went by other names, such as Buddy, Benny, Bobby, Bouncey and Bernie. The department's publicity director, Art Lentz, made a decision to bring the mascot to life. However, the original badger mascot was rather difficult to control. The live badger escaped several times during important sports occasions. Later the badger was placed to the Madison Zoo. The live badger was replaced with a small raccoon named Regdab.

From 1995 to 2000 Dick Bennett was the head coach of the basketball team. He is considered to be one of the most successful coaches in the Wisconsin Badgers history. During his tenure the team achieved their new 91-68 record. The present coach of the Wisconsin Badgers is Bo Ryan, who was hired in 2001. Since that year he led his team to every NCAA tournament. His current record is 112-49. The home for the Wisconsin Badgers basketball teams is the Kohl Center.
