In 2005 the Zips football team won the Mid-American Conference Championship and reached the Motor City Bowl and Division I-A bowl game. But they were swept from there by the University of Memphis. Their main adversaries are Kent State University and Youngstown State University.

Akrons basketball team made great strides over the last few years - in 2005-2006 they set a record of 23 victories in Division I and gained the post-season victory.

The Women's Cross Country team and the Men's Soccer team are notable for their last-season victories in the MAC championships. The Men's soccer Zips set the record and became the first whole-nation-rated team in the UA sports.
