The Akron Zips are alumni of the University of Akron, which was founded in 1870 and given to the
city in 1913 because of the financial problems. The University is situated in Akron, Ohio. It
received the status of a state one only in 1967.
It provides undergraduate programs and opportunities to further education in more than 200
different fields. The most famous university program is Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
program, because Akron is considered to be the Rubber Capital of the USA.
The University of Akron, its campus, sports and other facilities are still being under

The teams were given their name Zips, a shortened from Zippers, devised by its alumni
Margaret Hamlin – after wide-spread overshoes, worn in 1920-1930. A kangaroo was chosen as their
mascot, because it represents such essential for a sportsman qualities as speed, agility and
power.
In 2005 the Zips football team won the Mid-American Conference Championship and reached the
Motor City Bowl and Division I-A bowl game. But they were swept from there by the University of
Memphis. Their main adversaries are Kent State University and Youngstown State University.
Akrons basketball team made great strides over the last few years - in 2005-2006 they set a
record of 23 victories in Division I and gained the post-season victory.
The Women's Cross Country team and the Men's Soccer team are notable for their last-season
victories in the MAC championships. The Men's soccer Zips set the record and became the first
whole-nation-rated team in the UA sports.
