Between the years of 1931 and 1961 the Arizona State Devils played in the Border Conference. In 1962 the team joined the Western Athletic conference. At that time their coach was Frank Kush. Later, in 1978 the Arizona State Devils joined the Pacific 10 Conference. The years between 1997 and 2000 were almost futile. For this reason Bruce Snyder, one of the best football coaches, was dismissed. Soon after that a new head coach was employed for the team - Dirk Koetter. Koetter began his work with molding powerful quarterbacks as he thought they had the leading roles in the game.

In 2002 and 2003 the Arizona State Devils showed nice results mainly thanks to such prominent players as Terrell Suggs (defense), Shaun McDonald (wide receiver), Andrew Walter (quarterback).

2004 and 2005 brought some very impressive results to the Arizona State Devils as they became the winners in the games with Washington State, Arizona and Washington and became the Insight Bowl holders. Lucky were those who bought the tickets and saw the game, as it was really awesome.
