The mascot of the University is a wildcat named Wilbur. The wildcat was firstly created as a cartoon character in the University's humor magazine in 1959. In November 2009 Wilbur will celebrate his 50th anniversary.

The men's basketball team has been one of the most successful in NCAA since 1983, when Lute Olsen became the head coach. The team has made 22 consecutive appearances in NCAA Tournament, which is the best record in NCAA history. Under the head coach Lute Olson the Wildcats reached the Final Four of the NCAA tournament four times in 1988, 1994, 1997, and 2001. In 1997, the Wildcats defeated the University of Kentucky, winning the NCAA National Championship.

The football team started in 1899 under the name "Varsity" but in 1914 was renamed for the Wildcats. The Wildcats were rather successful during the 1990s leaded by the head coach Dick Tomey. In 1993 the team had its first 10-win season. In 1998 the team defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers and was ranked 3rd nationally.
