After finishing 2012 with a 4-8 record, the Arkansas Razorbacks truly felt the void left by former head coach Bobby Petrino, so they shocked the nation by signing off on former Wisconsin Badgers coach Bret Bielema to a six-year, $3.2 million contract. Having led the Badgers to three Big Ten titles, four double-digit win seasons, and going 68-24 in seven seasons, Bielema has all of the credentials the Hogs were looking for, and with the help of newly signed linebackers coach and SEC recruiting wizard, Randy Shannon, Arkansas is hoping to get back into the BCS National Championship picture. Bielema will bring his heralded power football scheme to the SEC, and though he’s yet to decide whether Brandon Allen or Brandon Mitchell will start at QB, both passers have the skills to get the job done. And with talents like RB Alex Collins, RB Jonathan Williams, C Travis Swanson, and DE Trey Flowers on board, Arkansas is on track for a quick turnaround.
The start of the 2013 Arkansas football schedule will take place on Aug. 31 against the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns inside Razorback Stadium. Arkansas will then begin its battle for the SEC Championship by taking on Heisman winner Johnny Manziel and the Texas A&M Aggies for the Southwest Classic Trophy (Sept. 28), followed by a slew of matchups that exemplify why many people feel that SEC football is the finest in the country. In the month of October alone, the Hogs will take on the Florida Gators (Oct. 5), South Carolina Gamecocks (Oct. 12), and defending national champion, Alabama Crimson Tide (Oct. 19). And, of course, fans that purchase Arkansas football tickets can see the team play in the annual Battle for the Golden Boot against the LSU Tigers on Nov. 30.
