The Tigers went winless in eight SEC matchups in 2012, which led to the firing of former head coach Gene Chizik, and now they’re hoping to reverse the trend by handing the keys over to the offensive coordinator that helped them win the 2010 BCS National Championship. Malzahn spent three years as OC at Auburn before heading up Arkansas State last season, where he led the Red Wolves to a 9-3 record and the Sun Belt Conference Championship. Now, he’s returning to The Plains and looks to be the man to revive the program. Offensive-minded fans will be happy to see Malzahn head-up his fast-paced scheme, and though there’s a QB competition brewing between sophomore Kiehl Frazier and freshman Jonathan Wallace, junior RB Tre Mason should step into the spotlight once again as the Tigers’ focal point, having amassed over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns rushing in 2012.
Jordan-Hare Stadium is the place to be come spring to witness the Tigers start up their season with a battle against the Washington State Cougars on Aug. 31. The first challenge for Auburn en route to securing a spot in the SEC Championship will come against the Mississippi St. Bulldogs on Sept. 14.
