The Colorado Buffaloes, or simply Buffaloes, is probably one of the most famous teams. Even those, who do not consider themselves sport fans, have surely heard the name of the team. They are the members of the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA Division. Since April 2005 the athletics director is Mike Bohn. Folsom Field became the home for the team where they perfect their professional skills. The mascot is Ralphie. The major team colors are Silver and gold.
The University of Colorado at Boulder hosts sixteen different sport teams. They all do their best to represent the university. All in all the teams have won twenty national championships (the majority of which in skiing).
The Colorado Buffaloes became famous very early. Already in 1893 they joined Colorado Football Association and lately, in 1909, the RMFAC (Rocky Mountain Faculty Athletic Conference). In 1938 the Colorado Buffaloes became the members of the Skyline Conference. The mens sports are basketball, cross-country, football, indoor and outdoor track and field, skiing, and golf. The main womens sports are golf, skiing, basketball, cross country, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball.
Indisputably, the most well known aspect of the Colorado Buffaloes is the football program. The team polishes up their skills at the Folsom Field, which was built in 1924.
The success of the Colorado Buffaloes came in 1884 when the team started to win many bowl games (all in all they made twenty-seven appearances before 2004). They are 8-time Colorado Football Association champions, 7-time RFMAC (Rocky Mountain Faculty Athletic Conference) champions, 5-time Big 8 Conference champions, 4-time Mountain States Conference champions, and 4-time Big 12 North champions. That is why the tickets were always so precious for the team fans as every game of the Colorado Buffaloes became historically important. In 1990 the Colorado Buffaloes won the Associated Press National championship.
The Colorado Buffaloes owe a lot to their professional coaches: Eddie Crowder, Dallas Ward, Bill Mallory, Chuck Fairbanks, Fred Folsom, Bill McCartney, and Gary Barnett. The present head coach is Dan Hawkins (hired in 2006).
Skiing is another sport where the athletes achieved a lot. The ski team joined the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association. The skiing program is one of the most successful ones. In this kind of sport the Colorado Buffaloes won the National championships 16 times (the last in 2006).
Talking about cross-country it should be mentioned that in 2001 and 2004 the Colorado Buffaloes mens team became the winners of the Mens Cross Country National Championships. The womens team won in 2000 and in 1004. The men took all ten Big 12 Conference prizes and women were awarded with nine honorary titles out of ten.
