The Eastern Michigan Eagles are following a mid-major college program. They are the members of the Division I A and the MAC Conference (the Mid-American Conference). From 1896 the Eastern Michigan Eagles joined the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (till 1925). In 1927 they became the members of the Michigan Collegiate Conference; in 1954 they joined the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. And only in 1987 they became the participants of the Mid-American Conference.
The intercollegiate athletics program was created to enrich the intellectual and physical improvements of the universitys students-athletes. This program has to provide competitive opportunities to all. The university is committed to help the development of the students character and ethnic values; to respect the principle of gender and ethnic diversity. The major objective is the assistance to all university athlete-students in meeting their educational goals.
The Eastern Michigan Eagles took part in two bowl games (in 1971 and 1987) and in the Michigan MAC Trophy game. Among the current NFL players are: Charlie Batch, Lional Dalton, Chris Roberson, L.J.Shelton, Jason Short, Barry Strokes, and Kevin Walter. The all time win-loss record of the team is 417-480-47 (2006).
The current head coach is Jeff Genyk. The home stadium for the team became the Rynearson Stadium, which is situated in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The stadium is mainly used for American football. It was opened in 1969 and can officially seat more than thirty thousand people. It is located on the Huron River. In it one of the best and the newest Mid-American Conference stadiums, as along with the football field (originally covered with grass, now artificial) theres also a running track. In 2005 it was reconstructed. It was named the Rynearson Stadium to commemorate Elton J. Rynearson, Senior, who was the coach of the Hurons during twenty-six seasons at the beginning of the twentieth century.
The Eastern Michigan Eagles have the Hall of Fame, which is reflecting new names from year to year. Here are some of the most famous EMU Hall of Famers and the year when they were inducted: Ron Adams (1999), Roger Arnett (1983), John Gates (2001), Jim Grant (1991), Chuck Paige (1985), Sue Parks (1992), Joe Brodie (1993), Laurie Byrd (1993), Jim Harkema (1999), Jeff Huxley (1991), Bob Jennings (2001), Earl Jones (2002), Olin Sanders (1977), Chuck Shonta (1982), Bill Tipton (1986), Leo Turner (1992) and many many others.
In November 2006 the Eastern Michigan Eagles will play their two final games. On the 17th of November they have to play against the Golden Flashes (Kent State University), and on the 24th of November – with Northern Illinois. Lets cheer up our favorites and buy tickets to see the crucial games.
