High quality matchups were still attracted by the game. Starting with the game played in 1981 it was shifted to New Year's Day.

A few major universities of the United States declined invitations for the game-taking place in the year 1991. That was because of the State of Arizona's decision not to adopt the Martin Luther King Holiday. The year 1998 is worth mentioning as it was the time when the Fiesta Bowl featured the BCS National Championship Game that was actually the first one of this kind.
