During the college football history their football team was one of the most successful having an 89% winning percentage and setting an NCAA record for most consecutive Top 5 finishes in the AP football poll. Every Seminoles game attracts thousands of spectators and almost always is a sold-out.

FSU football is noted for giving rise to such NFL stars as Deion Sanders, Terrell Buckley, Derrick Brooks, Sebastian Janikowski, Walter Jones, Corey Simon, Anquan Boldin, Javon Walker, Warrick Dunn, Peter Boulware, Laverneus Coles, Brad Johnson, Samari Rolle, and many other players.

Florida State University is also famous for its track and field teams. In 2005, the universitys men's track and field team was the winner of the Atlantic Coast Conference championship, the NCAA East Regional championship and the NCAA National Championship. The head coach of the Seminoles athletic team is Bob Braman.

The FSUs baseball program is considered to be one of the best in the country having competed in 18 College World Series. The Seminoles have had over 50 winning seasons since 1990. Since 2000, the universitys program has the highest winning percentage than any other university in the United States under the leadership of the head coach Mike Martin.
