Before 1993 the usual venue for the games was the Gator Bowl Stadium. However, the stadium was destroyed while constructing the ALLTEL Stadium, on the same place. During the construction works, namely in 1994, the game was held in Gainesville, Florida.
The following 1996 game, which was moved to the 1st of January at the time, and all the games to follow took place at ALLTEL Stadium. The Bowl is now supported by Toyota, from which it received its present name.
Originally, the Toyota Gator Bowl took the 2nd place Atlantic Coast Conference team versus the 2nd place Big East Conference team. However, starting from 2007 the Bowl will host the 3rd place Atlantic Coast Conference team against a similar team from either the Big East, Big 12 or Notre Dame.
The remuneration of each team will constitute $2.5 million in the 2006-2007 game, while a new agreement was reached with the CBS Sports channel, which will broadcast the game.
The Gator Bowl is one of the most famous sports events in Jacksonville. Still, the Bowls history remembers a tragic incident, which happened in 1963 in the Hotel Roosevelt. The Hotel was on fire right after the Gator Bowl party in the ballroom. Only later it was proved that it was not the party, which caused the fire to begin. It was just a very strange and awful coincidence with tragic consequences. 22 people lost their lives in the fire.
