Art Briles was the pride of the Houston Cougars from 2003-2006, when he left Houston to join the Baylor Bears. Art Briles is one of those coaches that turns around teams that have sunk to new lows. This had happened to the Cougars under the not-so-watchful eye of Dana Dimel. Over three years, the Cougars had won only eight games. They had an interim coach in Chris Thurmond and then were handed over to Kevin Sumlin in December of 2007, former coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners.
Sumlin was the first African-American head coach that the Cougars had brought on board. For the 2009 NCAA football season, Philip Hunt was named to the watch list for the Rotary Lombardi Award.
