The PetroSun Independence Bowl is a post-season NCAA-sanctioned Division I college football bowl game played every year since 1976. The traditional arena of PetroSun Independence Bowl match-ups is Independence Stadium in Shreveport in Louisiana, seating 53,000. From 1976 to 1981, the game used to pit the champion of the Southland Conference. The Southland Conference is now a Division I-AA conference. Then a Division I conference before the NCAA split the division into Bowl and Championship subdivisions against an at-large opponent. Then the game organizers decided to invite two at-large teams, and in 1995 it featured a Southeastern Conference school vs an at-large opponent.
