PetroSun Independence Bowl Ticket Information
The PetroSun Independence Bowl is a post-season NCAA-sanctioned Division I college football bowl game played every year since 1976. The traditional arena of PetroSun Independence Bowl match-ups is Independence Stadium in Shreveport in Louisiana, seating 53,000. From 1976 to 1981, the game used to pit the champion of the Southland Conference. The Southland Conference is now a Division I-AA conference. Then a Division I conference before the NCAA split the division into Bowl and Championship subdivisions against an at-large opponent. more
Then the game organizers decided to invite two at-large teams, and in 1995 it featured a Southeastern Conference school vs an at-large opponent.
Since 1998 and up to the present moment the Bowl has been featuring a match-up between the teams from premier American conferences – the Big 12 Conference and the SEC. Other conferences can participate only if neither of the two leagues has enough bowl-eligible teams.
The game saw many sponsors throughout its long history, including AB Electrolux Home Products, Newell Rubbermaid’s Sanford, and MainStay Investments. In August 2006, PetroSun Inc. became a new sponsor of the Bowl, and, will sponsor the Bowl up to 2009.
The latest game was played on December 28, 2006 at Independence Stadium in Shreveport in Louisiana. The match-up featured Oklahoma State versus Alabama and ended up with 34:31 to the benefit of Oklahoma State with Dantrell Savage and Jeremy Nethon from Oklahoma State having done most of the game.
The next PetroSun Independence Bowl kickoff is scheduled for December 30, 2007 at 7 pm. The venue remains the same – Independence Stadium at the fairgrounds in Shreveport. The 2007 game will mark the first time that the Independence Bowl has been played on a weekend at night since that 2000 game.
