The Iowa Hawkeyes are probably more famous for their football achievements. At the beginning of the 1870s football was played only as a club sport. Almost twenty years were needed to recognize it officially. The first game was played in 1889 between the University of Iowa and Grinnell College. Unfortunately the Hawkeyes were defeated with a slashing score 24 to 0. In 1892 two important events happened, which lately influenced greatly the game of the Iowa Hawkeyes. First of all, their first coach was hired (his name was E.A. Dalton), and secondly, the Iowa Hawkeyes joined their first conference – the WIUFA (the Western Interstate University Football Association).
In 1910 Jessie Hawley was hired. During their next seasons the Iowa Hawkeyes were practically invincible. In 1914 they won the match with the Northern Iowa with an astonishing score 95-0, which became the largest margin ever in college history. 1920s are sometimes called Howard Jones Era as this coach made the team a very strong one. That period was followed by 1930s, a so-called football depression for the team.
The years of the Second World War were hard as their head coach Eddie Anderson had to leave the team. He was an urologist and went to work at a military hospital. Nothing changed in 60s and 70s . In 1980s John Hayden Fry was hired to make the team win again. He made the emphasis on the defense forces and thus brought an exciting passing game to the Big 10 for the fist time in the teams history. The fans recovered their spirit and began supporting their team with more passion. They couldnt miss the game of their idols and were chasing the tickets as any game promised to be an exciting event.
At the moment the Iowa Hawkeyes coach is Kirk Ferentz who continues to contribute to the teams achievements.
