The Kansas Jayhawks (or simply the Jayhawks) are the sport teams who represent the University of Kansas. They are the members of the NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) Division I and the Big Twelve Conference. The main sports are basketball, baseball, cross-country, football, golf, softball, track, rowing, soccer, swimming, tennis, and volleyball (the last five are womens only). The Kansas Jayhawks won nine NCAA Division I championships, 2 of them in mens basketball, 1 in mens cross country, 3 in mens indoor track, and 3 in mens outdoor track).
The word jayhawk stands for a mythical bird. The term appeared before the Civil War (there was a special military group in Kansas who called themselves Jayhawkers). Later, the word was used to name all the people of Kansas.
The Kansas Jayhawks began playing football in 1890. Though the football team is not that powerful like, say, the basketball team, but nevertheless, there were and there are some very prominent alumni (Gale Sayers, or John Riggins, for instance). The current home for the Kansas Jayhawks is the Memorial Stadium (opened in 1921), which seats more than fifty thousand spectators. The present coach is Mark Mangino.
The major rivals of the Kansas Jayhawks were always the University of Missouri Tigers and the Kansas State Wildcats. The rivalry with the former began in 1891 and was known as the Border War, lately, it changed the name into the Border Showdown. The trophy, which gets the winner, is the Marching Band Drum. The rivalry with the Kansas State Wildcats is called Sunflower Showdown. The winner gets the Governors Cup (usually awarded by the governor of Kansas). Every year the Kansas Jayhawks also play with the Nebraska Cornhuskers (the rivalry began in 1905).
The Kansas Jayhawks made ten Bowl appearances during their long football career (the Orange Bowl in 1948 and 1969, the Bluebonnet Bowl in 1961, the Liberty Bowl in 1973, the Sun Bowl in 1975, the Hall of the fame Bowl in 1981, the Aloha Bowl in 1992 and 1995, the Mazda Tangerine Bowl in 2003, and the Fort Worth Bowl in 2005). Six of them they lost and 4 won.
Both mens and womens Kansas Jayhawks basketball teams play in Allen Fieldhouse. Their present coaches are Bonnie Henrickson and Bill Self. The mens team is a very successful one. During their history they became the winners of the national championships four times. The Kansas Jayhawks hold a significant record: they have forty-nine conference titles, and thus are the record-breakers among all other universities.
The first Kansas Jayhawks womens basketball team appeared in 1968. Their coach, Marian Washington, helped them to become the Big 8 and the NCAA competition participants. The team showed their best personal result in 1996 (their appearance at the Sweet 16).
