Marshall University sports teams are better known as Marshall Thundering Herd. Marshall University is a public university in West Virginia which was founded in 1837. Marshall's sports teams participate in NCAA Division I and is a member of the Conference USA. Marshall is a well-known football school which has its own unique sports history.

The very beginning (1964) and the following twenty years were quite disappointing for the school. The wins were scarce. But from the beginning of 1984, it all changed for the better. The University decided to honour its major donor and, therefore, the football stadium was renamed into Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

The Athletics Hall of Fame was founded at Marshall University in 1984. The main aim of this project was to honour the greatest athlets and their coaches. They were trying not to forget anyone and now the list contains sportsmen from all areas of Marshall University sports history. The most famous athletes from this list are: Bob Adkins (football), Bill Archer (wrestling), Bob Allen (basketball), Sonny Allen (basketball), George Aversman (basketball, baseball), Mike Barber (football) and many others.
