The Maryland Terrapins is the official name for the athletic teams of the University of Maryland, College Park. However, the team is also casually referred to as Terps. The Maryland Terrapins participate in NCAA Division I-A and are attributed to the Atlantic Coast Conference. The mascot of the team is Testudo the Turtle. It first appeared in 1932, after Dr. Curley Byrd proposed that the University's mascot should be a diamondback terrapin. The official and lucky colors of the team are red, black, white, and gold.
The University of Maryland was founded in the year of 1856; however it became the member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953. Within the period of time from 1921 to 1953, the Maryland Terrapins were members of the Southern Conference. In 1953 they left with 6 other Southern Conference Universities in order to establish the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The sports played by the Maryland Terrapins include in the mens program: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field and wrestling. The University of Maryland possesses multiple traditions connected with the school's athletics teams. One of them is the so-called Midnight Madness. Midnight Madness was first opened by the Maryland Head Coach Lefty Driesell in the year of 1970. Midnight Madness occurs at the earliest time the Men's Basketball Team can work out, which used to Midnight on the 1st day of practice. Students were often present at the practice and with the years, different light shows, tricks and other activities added to the tradition. The tradition has also become familiar and usual for other universities throughout the USA. Not so long ago, Maryland and other schools transferred the beginning of the Midnight Madness to around 7 o'clock in the morning. It was specially made with the purpose of inspiring more families and fans to come to the event. In the end, Midnight Madness has been renamed in Maryland Madness.
When talking about the students section at the team's stadiums, one can say that they are wild and clamorous, sometimes even vulgar. This makes Maryland one of the country's hardest venues to play at.

The most prominent schools alumni in the filed of athletics include the football players Bear Bryant, Vernon Davis, Darren Drozdov, Boomer Esiason, Ralph Friedgen, Kris Jenkins, Stan Jones, LaMont Jordan, Jermaine Lewis, Shawne Merriman, Kevin Plank (the founder of Under Armour), Mike Tice, Randy White, and Frank Wycheck.
