The University of Oklahoma (OU) represents 16 University sports teams. Both men's and women's athletic teams are called the Oklahoma Sooners. The moniker was given to early Oklahoma land rush pioneers. The team plays in the NCAA's Division I-A and in the South Division of the Big 12 Conference. The University's present director of athletics division is Joe Castiglione.
The University of Oklahoma is said to have one of the most remarkable college sports programs in the USA, because of the all-times excellent performance of multiple OU athletic teams. Most outstanding are football, men's and women's basketball, wrestling, baseball, men's and women's gymnastics, and softball teams. The University of Oklahoma used to be a charter member of the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWC) at the time of its formation in the year of 1914. 5 years later however, OU left the Southwest Athletic Conference and became a member of the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association. In 1928, the conference was dismissed, and OU joined the teams which made up the Big Six Conference. Over the next 30 years, more Universities became the members, therefore the name of the conference changed several times. The current name of the union is the Big 12 Conference.
The most prominent field of Sooner athletics is the college football program. It is viewed by many as one of the all-time best programs. Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Owen Field, has been the home of the team since the 1920s. The Sooners became winners of multiple bowl games, 39 conference tournaments, including every Big Seven championship, and seven Associated Press National Competitions. All this made the Sooners stand out in the Big 12 Conference. Oklahoma Sooners have received more points than any other team in Division I-A football history, in spite of having played over 60 games fewer than the 2nd best school in the list. The Sooners are owners of 7 national championships in football, namely in 1950, 1955, 1956, 1974, 1975, 1985, and also 2000 seasons.
Quite a lot of players were also winners of individual awards. The football team can boast of 4 Heisman Trophy winners, namely Steve Owens, Billy Vessels, Billy Sims and Jason White. Other award winners include Brian Bosworth, Joe Washington, Tommy McDonald, Greg Pruitt, Josh Heupel, Jerry Tubbs, Teddy Lehman, Lee Roy Selmon, Roy Williams, Tommie Harris, Mark Clayton, and Keith Jackson. The most remarkable coaches in the history of the team were Bennie Owen, Bud Wilkinson, Barry Switzer, and Bob Stoops.
On 2 August 2006 Sooners were marked as a top five team by many season preview magazines. Despite that, Oklahoma Sooners look to redouble their efforts and show the very best of them in the following season, hoping to achieve even greater results.
