Entering just its fourth year of existence, the 2013 Pinstripe Bowl will welcome back the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, who participated in 2011, while their opponent, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, are set to make their debut in the Dec. 28 contest annually held at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. It will be Notre Dame's eighth bowl game appearance in 10 years, and the bid also marks the second time the program will play at the current Yankee Stadium, but the first time competing in the New York metropolitan area during the postseason. The Fighting Irish will be looking to get back on track in terms of bowl wins, as after consecutive victories in 2008 and 2010, they've fallen in their last two appearances, which included the 2013 BCS National Championship. Since Oct. 5, Notre Dame has won five of its last seven games, and also has prevailed in each of its last four clashes with Rutgers, with the most recent meeting coming back in 2002.
In their last Pinstripe Bowl outing, the Scarlet Knights easily handled Iowa State, 27-13, for the program's fifth consecutive bowl win, and they'll look to start a new streak this year after being edged in overtime by Virginia Tech in the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl. After opening the season strong, Rutgers hit some bumps through the latter half of the 2013 slate, but a dominant 31-6 win over USF in the regular-season finale provided a much-needed confidence boost heading into the matchup with Notre Dame.
