From 1922 the South Carolina Gamecocks were the members of the Southern Conference; later, in 1953 they joined the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference). Because of many disputes the South Carolina Gamecocks left the ACC and acted independently for the next twelve years. In 1983 they became the members of the Metro Conference, and then in 1991 the Gamecocks joined the SEC (the Southeastern Conference). The SEC itself was later divided into 2 divisions (Eastern and Western) because its membership increased up to twelve universities. They started competing with it even before the Gamecocks became the members of the SEC (1991).
