From 1922 the South Carolina Gamecocks were the members of the Southern Conference; later, in 1953 they joined the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference). Because of many disputes the South Carolina Gamecocks left the ACC and acted independently for the next twelve years. In 1983 they became the members of the Metro Conference, and then in 1991 the Gamecocks joined the SEC (the Southeastern Conference). The SEC itself was later divided into 2 divisions (Eastern and Western) because its membership increased up to twelve universities. Mens soccer team competes in the Conference USA since 2005, as the SEC doesnt sponsor soccer.
The main school colors are black and garnet. The supplementary color is gold. The South Carolina Gamecocks became national champions for a few times. They also won some tournaments, which helped them to gain the recognition among their loyal fans.
As any other strong and famous team the South Carolina Gamecocks have got many rivals. One of them is Clemson University. They compete with each other practically in all sports (except for softball, equestrian, and rowing). The football rivalry between the two universities began in 1909, and since then they have played football every year. The rivalry began even before Clemson became a university.
Clemson began playing football in 1896 and the same year they appointed a match with the South Carolina Gamecocks. It was Thursday. Carolina won (12-6), and that day was called Big Thursday to commemorate the beginning of the two teams confrontation.
The nickname gamecocks appeared only in 1902, when the teams fans brought a poster featuring a tiger (the mascot of Clemson) with a gamecock standing on top of it. Clemson fans were really furious as the image meant the defeat of their favorite team.
In the SEC (the Southeastern conference) the major South Carolina Gamecocks rival is the University of Georgia. They started competing with it even before the Gamecocks became the members of the SEC (1991). The Eastern Division is considered to be one of the most competitive ones, and that is why the South Carolina Gamecocks started rivalry with some other strong teams, like the University of Florida.
