The Stanford Cardinals are sports teams, representing Leland Stanford Junior University, which was founded in 1891 and named in honor of the son of its original founders, Leland Stanford and his wife, - Leland Stanford Junior. Now the University has one of the largest campuses in the USA and is located in the center of the Silicon Valley.
It provides both undergraduate and graduate programs in different areas such as Medicine, Law, Engineering, Business and many others. They have highly skilled staff and faculty members with 18 Nobel laureates among them.
It also has an outstanding athletic history. Its athletics is represented by such sports as archery, badminton, volleyball, canoe and kayak, equestrian, cricket, cycling, horse polo, hockey, skiing, running, squash (mens), rugby (mens and womens), judo, taekwondo, lacrosse (mens), table tennis, triathlon, ultimate frisbee (mens and womens), and climbing.
All in all the University teams train in 34 different sports. It is a member of the NCAA Division I-A. Stanford University motivates its sportsmen and provides them with different scholarships.
The teams keep the name – the Cardinals, given in reference to the Universitys official color, though they were called the Indians for more than 40 years.
The womens ultimate Frisbee team have made great strides over the last decade and won the championships 6 times. The womens rugby team is also getting on well, has scored much success and won a national championship two years running in 2005 and 2006.
The other Cardinals teams are quite successful as well. They made their own history in the College championships. Their mens tennis team scored the victory a number of times and gained the NCAA titles 17 times. Among the other triumphal teams, which managed to gain at least 5 national titles are men's water polo, women's swimming, men's swimming, men's golf and women's volleyball team.
Stanford provides modern sports facilities and holds an annual U.S. Open Series tennis tournament. The Stanford Cardinals is a home of champions. The Cardinals won 75 NCAA championships over the last 25 years and 91 during their athletic history. It has one of the most advanced athletic programs in the United States and won 12 of 13 NACDA Directors Cups.
