2014 Gator Bowl: Nebraska vs. Georgia
Two familiar opponents will go head to head in this New Year's Day clash, as for the second straight year, the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Georgia Bulldogs will meet on Jan. 1. This time around, however, it will be in the 2014 Gator Bowl at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla., and the Huskers will surely be out to avenge a 45-31 loss suffered to the Bulldogs at last year’s Capital One Bowl. In a season slightly marred by the loss of injured star quarterback, Taylor Martinez, the postseason slot was a welcome achievement for Nebraska, which finished the regular season at 8-4, and will be looking to secure its first bowl game win since the 2009 Holiday Bowl. Additionally, the bid also marks the program’s 50th of all time, joining the ranks of just Alabama and Texas on the short list of schools boasting appearances in 50 or more bowl games, though it’ll be just the second time Nebraska has played in the Gator Bowl.
Georgia exhibited plenty of fight down the stretch, and nearly knocked off Auburn on the road in mid-November. Despite the disappointing result, the Bulldogs rebounded over its last two games to close out the regular season on a high note, and ultimately finished at No. 22 in the final BCS standings. After opening the season as a potential national championship contender, untimely injuries caused some bumps in the road for Georgia, but the return of Todd Gurley has injected some new life into the offense heading into the New Year’s Day matchup.
