Three Underclassmen Competing for USC Starting QB Spot

With Matt Barkley declaring for the NFL Draft, the USC Trojans have a spot to fill at the quarterback position, and though they have plenty of talent to take the reins, the starter for 2013 remains the No. 1 question in Los Angeles. Head coach Lane Kiffin has designated sophomores Cody Kessler and Max Wittek, and reigning Gatorade Player of the Year, freshman Max Brown, as co-starters on his depth chart, which means that the job will be won via an old-fashioned QB competition throughout the spring. Wittek boasts the most experience, having taken over the starting spot in the final two games last season after Barkley went down with a shoulder injury, but his performance wasn’t enough to secure the position. Regardless, USC should be a force in the Pac-12 with 16 returning starters, including offensive stars like Fred Biletnikoff Award-winning WR Marqise Lee and RB Silas Redd, and defensive standouts like DE Morgan Breslin and LB Dion Bailey.

The 2013 USC Trojans football schedule has the team beginning the season with a road game against the Hawai’i Warriors, which will take place at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Aug. 29. After the trip, USC will return home to Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where over 93,000 fans will witness them kick off their bid to play in the Pac-12 Championship by taking on the Washington State Cougars (Sept. 7). Over the course of the season, fans can purchase USC football tickets to see the team play in many other sensational matchups, including the battle for the Jeweled Shillelagh against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Oct. 19) and bitter Pac-12 rivalry games against the California Golden Bears (Nov. 9), Stanford Cardinal (Nov. 16), and UCLA Bruins (Nov. 30).
