The Virginia Cavaliers (or simply Virginia) are the sports teams of the University of Virginia. During the last thirty years, they improved many of their athletics achievements, thus becoming 16-time champions of the NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletics Association) championships. The mascot of the Virginia Cavaliers is a swordsman, or the cavalier. The name refers to the people loyal to the English crown. The major school colors are navy blue and orange. Originally, silver and red were chosen, but after the first games, the teams realized that those colors did not show up well on dirty fields. Later, the new colors were selected.
The Virginia Cavaliers football team participates in the NCAA Division I A and the ACC (the Atlantic Coast Conference). The football program was established in 1888.
Hired in 1982, George Welsh became the winningest football coach of the Virginia Cavaliers football team and the ACC history. It took him 19 long years to train the team to achieve a new universitys record of 134-86-3, and to lead the players to twelve Bowl games. Loved and admired by the Cavaliers and the teams fans, George Welsh retired in 2000 to pass the baton to the current coach of the team Al Groh. The later managed to live up to the hopes of the Virginia Cavaliers leading the team to four consecutive winning seasons (from 2001-2002 to 2004-2005).
In 2007, the team will face a difficult season, as they have to overcome the disappointing results of the losing record of the previous 2006 season. The teams coordinator Mike London helped the Virginia Cavaliers to notably improve their achievements. The head coach counts on the newcomers and their effective performance in the new season. Particularly, the running back Keith Payne made some notable achievements during the 2005-2006 season. Another freshman, the quarterback Peter Lalich, will also join the Virginia Cavaliers in 2007.
The Virginia Cavaliers became the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion in 1908; and in 1989 and 1995, the football team won the ACC Championships. The team is also notable for many prominent football players, who contributed a lot to the success of the universitys program: Will Brice, Elton Brown, Mark Dixon, Bill Dudley, Thomas Jones, Heath Miller, Herman Moore, John St. Clair, and many more. Six Virginia Cavaliers were inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame (Bill Dudley, Earle Neale, Tom Scott, Frank Murray, Joe Palumbo, and George Welsh).
The home of the Virginia Cavaliers football team is the Scott Stadium. Among the traditional Virginia Cavaliers rivals are the UNC (the University of North Carolina), which is one of the oldest rivals, the Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University), and the Florida State (the Florida State University).
