The Virginia Tech Hokies is the official name for the football team that represents Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, which is usually referred to as Virginia Tech. Besides football, Virginia Tech also supports 17 other kinds of sports and participates in the NCAA Division I level. Virginia Tech's men's sports teams also specialize in baseball, basketball, track and field, cross country, swimming, golf, soccer, tennis, and wrestling. The Virginia Tech Hokies take part in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), which the University joined in the year of 2003. Before 2003, the team had been a member of five other conferences, the most recent one of them the Big East.

Virginia Tech football team is typically referred to as the Hokies. The mascot of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University football team is the Hokie Bird. The official colors of the football team are maroon and orange.

The football Tech team takes part in the Commonwealth Cup every year. It also participates in the NCAA Division I-A and the Coastal Division of Atlantic Coast Conference. Their home stadium is the Lane Stadium. It is said to be one of the loudest stadiums in the USA, and it was awarded the title of the best home field advantage in the country in 2005 by Rivals.com. The head coach of the football team is Frank Beamer, who is known as the 3rd winningest coach in Division I-A. Beamer is a Virginia Tech graduate, and he used to be a defensive back for the Hokies.

The Hokies football team now has the 5th longest bowl game period in the USA, having taken part in the postseason every year starting from 1993. During that time, the Hokies team has achieved the Top-10 ranking 4 times, got victories in 4 conference competitions, out of them 3 Big East and 1 ACC tournament, and took part in one national championship.

The team can be really proud of its players, several of which have received various individual awards, the most prominent of which is, perhaps, the player Corey Moore, who was awarded with the Bronko Nagurski Trophy in 1999 and the Lombardi Award the same year. The Dave Rimington Trophy was gained by Jake Grove in 2003, while Bruce Smith was given the Outland Trophy in 1984. The legendary coach Frank Beamer received the Paul Bear Bryant Award in 1999.
