The Cinderella story of the 2003 football season was the Carolina Panthers
and the emergence of Jake Delhomme as a clutch, big play quarterback. In 2002
the panthers only won seven of sixteen, in 2003 they won twelve games to only
four losses, propelling them into the playoffs and eventually to the Super Bowl.
Though they lost to the better team that night, they realized they needed to
make some changes in the off-season if they wanted to be back next year. In the
draft, Carolina snatched corner Chris Gamble from Ohio State to strengthen
already on of the top defenses in the NFL. Wide receiver Keary Colbert will step
in immediately as a #4 receiver and is definitely a rookie to watch.
Explosiveness on offense is something the Panthers have lacked in recent
years, but in 2003 Steve Smith and newly acquired Stephen Davis added some new
talent to a fledgling offense. With a power running game behind Davis, and a
legitimate deep threat in Smith, Delhomme should feel even better behind center.
Last year no one saw Carolina coming, this year everyone has their number.
Panthers fans will be rushing for tickets to see how their defending NFC champs
fair.
