The Boston Bruins is one of the leading NHL hockey teams , a member of so-called the Original Six. Originally it was owned by Charles Adams, a grocery magnate, who purchased it for $15,000 in 1924. The teams name devised by its first general manager was given after the brown bear, associated with speed, or quickness, and unusual cunning. This nickname goes with the teams traditional colors of black and gold, originally brown and gold, which coincide with the ones of Adams grocery business.
It is remarkable that the team completely failed during its first season. And only in 1927-1928, during their third season the things picked up and they played off a Stanley Cup match but were defeated by Ottawa Senators in the final. Great success came in 1929 when they won the final match against the New York Rangers and received their first Stanley Cup. In 1929-1930 the Boston Bruins had one of its best seasons, having shown stable playing and 38 successful games out of 44. Nevertheless, they lost to the Montreal Canadiens in the final match and only after a decade in 1939 they managed to win their next Cup.
During World War II the Boston Bruins fell off and had quite a difficult time, with most of its star-players having gone to war and only Cowley remained. After the war the team had more than twenty years down-turn caused by financial problems, and the lack of quality players. In 1970 with such stars as Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito they defeated the St. Louis Blues . It was a really marvelous game and it made a history in NHL.
During the next decade the Bruins showed stable playing, though having appeared in the playoff games they couldnt scrape through them and reach the final. Finally there was a break-point in 1988 and the Bruins got their fourth Stanley Cup.
The Boston Bruins of today is a young, ambitious team with quite a number of prospective star-players. But it needs resources to turn their effective hockey-playing into constant playoff-appearing and winning.
In spite of all its wins and losses, and financial problems that the team has been lately facing, the team with such a unique and interesting history, is highly respected by their countrymen, and matches with the participation of the Boston Bruins are attended by large crowds of fans each season.
