New York Islanders Midseason Update

Before Neil Smith's firing, the New York Islanders made a few free agent acquisitions, which included forwards Mike Sillinger and Chris Simon and defensemen Brendan Witt and Tom Poti. After Neil Smith was dismissed, Viktor Kozlov, Sean Hill, and Richard Park signed contracts with the New York Islanders.

In September 2006, the Islanders announced that they had signed a fifteen-year 67.5 million dollar contract with goaltender Rick DiPietro, which became one of the longest deals in professional sports history. In December 2006, the New York Islanders traded Alexei Zhitnik in exchange for defenseman Freddy Meyer. Later, they traded forward Mike York to the Flyers for Randy Robitaille. Currently, the Islanders are fourth in their division with 23 wins versus 21 losses.
