During 2006, the Phoenix Coyotes acquired many new players, including goaltender Mikael Tellqvist; defensemen Nick Boynton, Ed Jovanovski, and Travis Roche; and forwards Owen Nolan, Patrick Fischer, Kevyn Adams, Mike Zigomanis, Josh Gratton, Joel Perrault, Steven Reinprecht, Georges Laraque, Yanic Perreault, and Jeremy Roenick.

The Coyotes new 2006-07 season started as a rebuilding stage for the franchise. The team tried to become good enough to lead in the increasingly competitive Western Conference. The Phoenix Coyotes are not considered one of the elite West teams, and they know that they have to make some huge changes to reach the desired status. The team tried to do so by acquiring defenseman Ed Jovanovski, Jeremy Roenick and Owen Nolan. The club hopes to get solid goaltending from Curtis Joseph, and with the great head coach Wayne Gretzky. The Phoenix Coyotes are trying to improve the game of their prospect players with the help of their veteran players.
