Maple Leafs Hockey

The Toronto Maple Leafs are a professional hockey team from Toronto, Canada. The teams long history began in 1917 when the National Hockey League was established in Montreal. The team was originally called the Toronto Arenas. While known as the Toronto Arenas, the team won their first Stanley Cup in the NHL inaugural season from 1917 to 1918. Before their final name, the Toronto Maple Leafs were renamed for the second time: St Patricks. Under the name of St Patricks, they won Lord Stanleys Mug in 1922. The teams first owner, Charlie Querrie sold the team in 1927 to Con Smyth who immediately renamed the team the Toronto Maple leafs.

In 1931-1932 the team moved to their new arena, Maple Leaf Gardens and won their third Stanley Cup. The Leafs star players at that time were Charlie Conacher and Harvey Jackson. In the next 7 years the Leafs had reached the final five times but did not win as they were defeated by the Maroons, The Detroit Red Wings, the Chicago Black Hawks, Boston and the Rangers.

In the season of 1941-1942 they won their 4th Stanley Cup against the Red Wings.

1962 to 1964 was a great time for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they won three consecutive Stanley Cups mainly due to the perfect play of such prominent players as Franck Mahovich, Red Kelly, Dave Keon, Tim Horton and Johny Bower. The team became extremely popular. The tickets for each game were sold out long before the match.

In 1967 the Leafs won their last Stanley Cup playing against the Canadiens with a winning score of 4-2.

The 1980s became the era of the teams owner Harold Ballard. Ballard traded away many of the Leafs important players. As a result, from 1980 to 1992 the team did not make the playoffs and failed to post a winning record In 1990, after Ballards death Steve Starvo bought the team and the Leafs began a rebirth winning the Norris Division final against St. Louis Blues.

In 1999 the Leafs moved to their new arena: Air Canada Centre. That year the Toronto Maple Leafs got into the playoffs but lost to the Buffalo Sabers in the Eastern Conference Finals.

In 2000 and 2001 the Leafs got into the second round of the playoffs being eliminated twice by the New Jersey Devils. In their 2002 season the teams record was quite impressive even with their most important players sidelined as a result of injuries. The Leafs got into the conference finals due to the efforts of less experienced players who were lead by Garry Roberts but nevertheless, they still lost to the Hurricanes.

In 2006 Pat Quinn became the Toronto Maple Leafs newest coach. These days the Leafs are one of the most popular teams in Canada with the most loyal fans.
