The Washington Capitals are an ice hockey team seated in Washington, D.C.. They are respected members of the National Hockey League, or NHL.

The Washington Capitals belongs to the Southeast Division and was founded in 1974. Their main team colours are Black, Blue and Bronze. The owner of the team is still Ted Leonis, the general manager is George McPhee. The team father, the head coach is Glen Hanlon. Chris Clark was elected the teams captain after Halpern left the Washington Capitals to join the Dallas Stars.

Along with many other teams, the Washington Capitals joined the National Hockey in 1974-1975 season. At that time the NHL consisted of 30 teams and the competition between the new teams was enormously high. In their first season, the Washington Capitals were not that successful at all, as they lost 67 games out of 80 games.

During the rest of the 1970s and early 1980s the sutuation was not much better than before. But luckily a new team general manager was hired to change the whole situation. His name was David Poile. Right away he began to introduce changes to the teams composition, dealing Ryan Walter and Rick Green for Rod Langway, Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis and Craig Laughlin. The energy and vigour of these new players was the core thing that helped the Washington Capitals reach the playoffs in 1983 - for the first time in their history! Moreover, the Capitals were great success thanks to Dennis Maruk, Mike Gartner, and Bobby Carpenter who turned out to be goal-scoring team players.

The subsequent fourteen years the Washington Capitals were in the playoffs, but every time they were losers. In the late 1980s, only once the team got to the second round in the playoffs, despite the fact that there was a continuing flow of new hockey players like Mike Ridley, Gartner, Carpenter, Dino Ciccarelli, Bengt Gustafsson, Dave Christian, Larry Murphy and many others. Soon after Dale Hunter was not allowed to play in the subsequent 21 games for a ruthless hit on Pierre Turgeon, the team started having troubles. That was a double misfortune as he had just scored the winning goal.

In 1999, the Washington Capitals were not in the playoffs. But nevertheless the team had a stroke of luck in the summer of 2001, by purchasing Jaromir Jagr who was a five-time Art Ross Trophy winner and one of the best players in the National Hockey League. But inspite of this, the Washington Caps failed to enter the playoffs in the year of 2002.

The fans saw the return of the Washington Capitals in 2003, but in fact were disapointed as the team lost again. This time Jason Doig was to be found fault with, as he warranted a penalty by his unprofessional game. The Washington Capitals ended the year of 2004 with 23 wins and 56 losses, their worst season even during their 26-year old history.

Presently, the Washington Capitals consists of many outstanding players and each of them has made a great contribution to the history of the team. Among them there are goaltenders Brent Johnson and Olaf Kolzig, defensemen Brian Pothier, John Erskine, Jamie Heward, Shaone Morrisonn, Steve Eminger, Mike Green and Bryan Muir, forwards Alexander Ovechkin, Dainius Zubrus, Matt Bradley, Brian Sutherby, Chris Clark, Matt Pettinger and many others.
