In fall 2006, a new ice skating rink opened atop the Ballston Common Mall, which is located in Arlington County, Virginia. The new rink will be the Washington Capitals practice sports facility.

On February 1, 2007, the Washington Capitals played with the Florida Panthers. That was a disappointing match for both the team and its fans. The Panthers turned out to be stronger that their opponents and beat the Capitals 6 to 3. Stumpel and Gelinas each scored twice during the game, they became “the beginning and the end” of the Panthers. Stumpel opened the score and Gelinas capped it with another one. Juraj Kolnik added one goal and one assist, and thus helped their team to win third consecutive meeting with the Washington Capitals.
