The last time Tiger Woods played in a PGA event, he was in classic form, claiming his 75th career win by running away with the Farmer’s Insurance Open in January. Since then, the legend has taken a few weeks off, but he’s ready to come back for more this weekend as he gears up for the 2013 WGC Accenture Match Play Championship. The event will last from February 20th to the 24th at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Marana, Arizona, and Woods can be plenty confident as he has won the event three times already. This is always one of the more exciting tournaments of the year, as it’s a single-elimination format that pits the world’s top 64 players against one another, and to win, a golfer must win six matches in five days. With Woods back playing his best and hoping to get his stroke right for the 2013 Masters Tournament, it should be even more spectacular this year.
Woods is coming into the tournament as the No. 1 seed in the Gary Player Bracket, and he’ll play Charles Howell III in the first round. He’s only lost twice in the first round in the past 12 years, but he hasn’t advanced past the second round since 2008. The other top seeds are Rory McIlroy (Bobby Jones Bracket), who’ll face off against Shane Lowry; Luke Donald (Sam Snead Bracket), who’ll play Marcel Siem; and Louis Oosthuizen (Ben Hogan Bracket), who’ll play against Richie Ramsay. Last year, American Hunter Mahan took down Rory McIlroy, 2&1, to claim the $1.4 M in prize money, and this year he’ll face off against Mattero Manassero in the first round. This is one of the finest tournaments of the early PGA season, so make sure to claim your 2013 Accenture Match Play Championship tickets today.
